Audley Crown on Branding
by Hubertus von Alvensleben 7 July 2008
I don't get every word Mr. Crown says, but it is a nice insight of where Branding comes from, what it is and why they do it.
"My name is Audley Crown, I have been ranching all my life, I am 72 years old. I was born and raised ... west of Palm City. Branding started way back in eighteen hundred with cattle caught in open range. It's the only way they had it and it is the ranches way of identification. We still do it through today because it is much easier to identify this cattle ... and we brand it for that reason: for identification."
Paticular compelling is Mr. Crown's own brand story:
"He said: 'we need a brand'. And I said: 'what are we gonna do?' He said 'we are down here in the north of Dallas' and I said 'Dallas is known for Big “D”. Why don't we just call this place Big “D” Ranch?"
Simple, different, focused and true.
